What’s better for me- Face Hobbing & Lapping or Face Milling & Grinding?
Gleason Corporation
The answer to the question, which process to choose, face hobbing or face milling depends on the manufacturing cost per part and the performance for a particular application. Today it is a given, that the decision between face hobbing or face milling is also the decision between lapping or grinding. The presentation will give firm answers to manufacturers of bevel and hypoid gears depending on their application and manufacturing environment. The presentation also puts a light on gear quality, manufacturing stability as well as manufacturing of very low quantities just in time and how this relates to the two different process combinations.

Honing and Cup Wheel Superfinishing: A Cost-effective and Higher-quality Alternative to ID and Face Grinding
Nagel Precision, Inc.
Stringent NVH requirements and high loads are forcing gear designers to increasingly tighten the surface finish, bore size, bore-to-face perpendicularity tolerances and flatness on the bores and thrust faces of gears. Currently ID grinding is followed by a secondary superfinishing operation to achieve such finishes and tolerances. The industry’s first gear hone and face cup wheel finishing combo machine enables gear manufacturers to achieve this in a single machine. This process while producing superior bore and face finishes at lower per piece cost compared to id/face grinding, yields additional savings due to the elimination of the secondary finishing operation.
2:30 PM
Considerations for optimum methods of gear finishing

Capital Equipment – How to Reduce Costs While Improving Agility
DMG/ Mori Seiki
Machine tool builders have historically failed to meet the needs of gear suppliers in three areas; the machines have been expensive, have been inflexible (in consolidation of operations) and inflexible in terms of the type and sizes of gears which could be produced. This presentation discloses new solutions which enable less expensive machines to consolidate turning, boring, and inspection with gear cutting, and which allow a single machine to produce a wide range of gear types.
4:30 PM
